Her Name is Aphrodite
The French Bulldog who Tugged at My Compassionate Heartstrings.
Her name is Aphrodite. She fit in the palm of my hands when she was born and then she grew only big enough to fit in my lap. She snorts when she plays and when she sleeps she crawls under the blankets to sleep against the curve of my body for heat. She loves to chase waves and falling snow and she loves peanut butter. She is a French Bulldog and she is why I no longer view being vegan as a health choice alone but a complete compassionate and ethical one.
Now, don’t get me wrong. This decision did not happen overnight. It had its ups and downs and I struggled with a lot of frustration and confusion, especially being in the fitness industry and having everyone tell me that I NEEDED meat. Well, let me tell you this, stop listening to people with whom your values don’t align. I know it can be hard sometimes when people just won’t stop giving you their opinion based on their lifestyle, but fuck it! Of course, be respectful, everyone has the right to their own opinion (including you) but sometimes you just have to walk or run away. Do your own research and do what feels right for you.
I stopped eating meat back in 2012 and over the course of the those years dabbled with being vegan.
When I got Aphrodite in May of 2016, it all started to shift for me. I had been trying to introduce fish into my diet, while also having the strong urge to go vegan. It was a challenging and conflicting time since I loved my dog and was feeling more connected to the animal world.
Switching to a vegan lifestyle is not easy - it is a journey and it comes with beautiful challenges. Nobody is perfect, but we should all make an effort to be the best humans we can be.
For me, when I tried to introduce fish into my diet, something inside me was different. I couldn't do it. It morally felt wrong. So, in January 2017, I went completely vegan. I was all in. Absolutely no animal products from the food I eat to the clothes and products I wear. From that piont on I decided that I would do my best to lead the most mindful and conscious lifestyle I could and I haven't looked back since.
Do I miss meat? Not even a little bit. Do I miss dairy? Hell no. After making my this decision I watched all of the documentaries from Hungry For Change, Forks Over Knives, Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead to What The Health and Okja. I would go down rabbit holes on social media of research about factory farming and the dairy industry. I could not unsee what had been seen. There was no turning back. I promise you ignorance is not bliss and knowledge is power.
From this point on it became all about how I could be a better human and how I could help this big, beautiful place we call home.
If you love this planet we live on and you love animals then you are already halfway there. Who is your Aphrodite?
